Pigmentation, whether it shows up as dark spots, melasma, post-acne marks or general uneven skin tone, is one of the most frustrating skin concerns to live with and one of the most misunderstood to treat. Many people spend years and significant money on products that deliver very little. The reason is simple: topical products alone rarely reach deep enough to make a meaningful difference in established pigmentation.

What causes pigmentation?

Melanin is produced by cells called melanocytes in response to various triggers. The most common are sun exposure, hormonal changes (particularly in pregnancy or when taking the oral contraceptive pill), skin inflammation (such as acne or eczema), and genetics. Once melanin is overproduced, it can sit in the skin for months or years, especially if the trigger is still present.

This is why sun protection is non-negotiable in any pigmentation treatment plan. Without it, any progress made will be undone.

What treatments work?

Glutathione

Glutathione inhibits tyrosinase, the enzyme responsible for melanin production. Used as injections or IV drips, it works systematically to reduce pigment production across the face and body. Results are gradual but cumulative.

Exosomes

Exosome treatments target pigmentation at the cellular signalling level, reducing melanin production and improving overall skin tone. Often combined with microneedling for deeper penetration.

Chemical peels and dermaplaning

Removing the outer layers of skin through exfoliation can improve the appearance of surface-level pigmentation. These are best used as adjuncts to deeper treatments rather than standalone solutions for significant pigmentation.

Mesotherapy

Mesotherapy cocktails can include brightening agents delivered directly into the skin, supporting a more even tone alongside other treatments.

What about at-home care?

SPF 50 every single day, even in winter, is the foundation of any pigmentation management plan. Vitamin C serums are helpful antioxidants. Niacinamide can reduce melanin transfer within the skin. These support professional treatments but rarely fix pigmentation on their own.
