What is Dermaplaning?

Dermaplaning is one of those treatments that delivers instant, visible results from the very first session. Using a precision surgical scalpel held at a careful angle, your practitioner gently removes the outermost layer of dead skin cells and vellus hair (the fine peach fuzz that covers the face) to reveal the fresher, smoother skin underneath.
The effect is immediate: skin looks noticeably brighter, feels softer and your skincare products absorb far better. It is also one of the few treatments that is completely painless, requires zero downtime and is suitable for most skin types, which is why it has become a firm favourite with our clients at Tu Bella in Hemel Hempstead.
What are the benefits?
- Instantly smoother, brighter, more radiant skin
- Removal of fine facial hair that traps oil and dead skin
- Better absorption of serums and moisturisers
- A flawless, even base for makeup
- Stimulates cell turnover
- No downtime, completely painless
- Suitable for most skin types including dry, dull and mature skin
How does it work?
The scalpel is used in short, feather-like strokes at a precise 45-degree angle across the skin surface. This removes the layer of accumulated dead skin cells and the vellus hair that traps debris in the pores. The result is a deeply exfoliated, clean skin surface that reflects light more evenly and accepts skincare and makeup far more effectively.
What does the treatment involve?
Your skin is cleansed and prepped first. The dermaplaning itself takes around 20 to 30 minutes, with the full appointment including consultation and aftercare taking around 45 minutes. You will see a difference the moment you look in the mirror.
How often can I have it?
Every four to six weeks, in line with the skin's natural cell turnover cycle. Many clients combine dermaplaning with a facial or a light chemical peel for enhanced results.
Who is suitable?
Dermaplaning is suitable for most skin types and tones, including dry, dehydrated, dull and mature skin. It is not recommended if you have active acne, rosacea flares or very sensitive reactive skin during a flare-up. We will assess your skin before proceeding.
Aftercare
- Avoid direct sun exposure and wear SPF 50 for at least one week
- Avoid retinoids and strong active ingredients for 48 hours
- Keep skin well moisturised and hydrated
- Avoid any manual exfoliation for one week
- Avoid makeup for the rest of the day if possible
Frequently asked questions
Will the facial hair grow back thicker or darker?
No. This is one of the most common concerns and it is a myth. Vellus hair (peach fuzz) is very different from terminal hair (like eyebrows or hair on the head). Removing vellus hair with a blade does not affect the follicle or change the hair's structure. It grows back exactly as it was before: fine and light.
Is it suitable for acne-prone skin?
Not during an active breakout, as the blade can spread bacteria and irritate inflamed skin. However, clients with acne-prone skin that is currently clear often benefit from dermaplaning, as removing dead skin cells reduces pore congestion. We will assess your skin on the day.
Does it hurt?
Not at all. It is one of the most comfortable aesthetic treatments available. Most clients describe it as a pleasant, tickling sensation. There is no numbing required.
Can I combine dermaplaning with a facial or peel?
Yes, and this is actually one of the best ways to maximise results. Removing the outer layer of dead skin before a facial or light chemical peel allows the active ingredients to penetrate much more effectively. Ask about our combined treatments at your consultation.
How often can I have dermaplaning?
Every four to six weeks. This aligns with the skin's natural cell renewal cycle. Going more frequently than this does not give the skin time to complete its natural cycle of regeneration.
Can I wear makeup straight after?
We recommend leaving skin product-free for the rest of the day if possible, particularly if you have combined dermaplaning with a peel or active serums. The following morning you can apply makeup as normal, and you will notice it sits completely differently on the freshly exfoliated skin.
Why does dermaplaned skin glow so much?
Light reflects off smooth, even surfaces. Accumulated dead skin cells create an uneven, rough surface that scatters light and makes skin look dull. When that layer is removed, the fresh cells beneath reflect light much more evenly, which is what creates that immediately radiant, almost lit-from-within effect.
