What is Tear Trough Filler?
The tear trough is the hollow that develops beneath the eye, creating a sunken, tired appearance and the kind of dark shadow that concealer never quite covers. Tear trough filler restores volume to this area, softening the hollow and the shadow it creates for a more rested, refreshed look.
This is one of the most technically demanding filler treatments available, which is why it matters enormously who you trust with it. Zupash Salman is specifically CPD-certified in tear trough treatment and takes a careful, conservative approach to ensure a natural result.
What causes tear troughs?
As we age, the fat pads beneath the eye reduce in volume and the skin loses elasticity, causing the area to sink inward and creating a hollow. Some people notice a tear trough from a young age due to genetics. Either way, filler can make a significant difference to the way the eye area looks at rest.
How does it work?
A soft, low-density hyaluronic acid filler is placed along the tear trough, beneath the orbicularis muscle. This restores the lost volume and lifts the skin, softening the hollow and the shadow it casts beneath the eye.
What does the treatment involve?
Numbing cream is applied before the treatment begins. Filler is placed using a fine cannula or needle, depending on your anatomy. The appointment takes 30 to 45 minutes. Results are visible straight away, though some swelling over the first couple of days is expected before the final result settles.
How long do results last?
Results are visible immediately and typically last twelve to eighteen months in this area, sometimes longer, as the tear trough region tends to metabolise filler slowly.
Who is suitable?
Tear trough filler works best for clients with a genuine hollow beneath the eye creating a sunken or dark appearance. It is not ideal for clients whose main issue is significant puffiness or eye bags, as filler can worsen these concerns. A thorough assessment at consultation is essential before this treatment.
Aftercare
- Avoid rubbing the eye area for 48 hours
- Sleep with your head slightly elevated for the first two nights
- Some swelling is normal and typically peaks at 24 to 48 hours before settling
- Avoid strenuous exercise for 48 hours
- A two-week review appointment is included
Frequently asked questions
Am I a good candidate for tear trough filler?
You are likely a good candidate if you have a visible hollow beneath the eye creating a shadowed, tired look. If you have significant puffiness or true under-eye bags, filler may not be the right solution as it can sometimes make these look more pronounced. A consultation will help us assess this clearly.
What is the difference between tear trough filler and under-eye skin boosters?
Tear trough filler is placed deeper beneath the eye to fill a structural hollow. It uses a firmer product and addresses volume loss. Under-eye skin boosters are placed more superficially in the skin to improve hydration, texture and fine lines. They are a softer, more subtle treatment. We will recommend the right option at consultation.
Does it hurt?
Numbing cream is applied beforehand, which makes the treatment much more comfortable. The eye area is sensitive and you may feel mild pressure, but the vast majority of clients find it tolerable.
Is there bruising or swelling?
Swelling is common in the first 24 to 48 hours and is a normal part of the healing process. Bruising can occur around the eye area and may last five to seven days. Arnica gel and avoiding blood-thinning medications in the week before (if safe to do so) can help reduce bruising.
Can tear trough filler be dissolved?
Yes. Hyaluronic acid filler can be dissolved using an enzyme called hyaluronidase if the result is not right or if any complication arises. This is one of the key reasons we use hyaluronic acid for this sensitive area.
What if I have puffiness as well as hollowing?
We will assess this carefully at your consultation. If puffiness is the dominant concern rather than hollowing, filler may not be appropriate as it can draw more attention to the puffiness. We will advise on the most suitable treatment for your specific anatomy.
