Glutathione has been used in dermatology and integrative medicine for decades, but it has recently found a much wider audience among people seeking a more even, radiant complexion. At Tu Bella in Hemel Hempstead, we offer both glutathione injections and IV glutathione drips. Here is what you need to know.

What is glutathione?

Glutathione is a tripeptide, a small protein made from three amino acids (glycine, cysteine and glutamic acid), that occurs naturally in virtually every cell in the body. It is often called the "master antioxidant" because it plays a central role in neutralising free radicals, supporting the immune system, detoxifying the liver and regenerating other antioxidants like vitamins C and E.

Glutathione levels naturally decline with age, and are depleted by stress, poor sleep, alcohol and certain medications.

What does it do for the skin?

Glutathione interferes with the production of melanin, the pigment responsible for dark spots, uneven skin tone and hyperpigmentation. By inhibiting the enzyme tyrosinase, it shifts melanin production towards lighter pigments, resulting in a brighter, more even complexion over time.

It also has anti-inflammatory properties that can calm reactive or stressed skin, and its antioxidant action helps protect the skin from environmental damage.

Injections vs IV drip, what is the difference?

Glutathione injections are administered intramuscularly or intravenously in a shorter session. They are a cost-effective option for regular top-ups and are particularly popular for ongoing skin brightening.

Glutathione IV drips deliver a higher dose directly into the bloodstream over a longer session. The immediate bioavailability means the body receives the full dose without any loss through digestion, and the systemic effects, immune support, cellular detox, energy, are more pronounced.

What results can you expect?

Skin brightening from glutathione is gradual. Most people notice a difference after four to eight sessions. The skin looks more even, dark spots appear lighter and there is a general improvement in radiance. Results are cumulative, the more consistently you have the treatment, the better the outcome.

Glutathione is not a skin bleaching agent and does not produce the dramatic lightening seen with harsh chemical treatments. It works by supporting and optimising the skin's natural processes.
