Dark circles are one of the most common concerns we see at Tu Bella in Hemel Hempstead. They make people look tired, older and sometimes unwell, even when they feel perfectly fine. The frustrating thing is that they are also one of the most nuanced concerns to treat, because the cause can be completely different from person to person.

Why do dark circles happen?

There is no single answer. Dark circles can be caused by:

  • Hollow tear troughs: a depression beneath the eye that casts a shadow
  • Thin skin: allowing the bluish-purple blood vessels beneath to show through
  • Pigmentation: actual dark colouration in the skin itself
  • Puffiness: swelling above can create a shadow effect below
  • Genetics: some people simply inherit a predisposition to dark circles

This matters enormously because the treatment for a hollow tear trough is completely different from the treatment for pigmentation. Treating the wrong cause will not help and may make things worse.

Tear trough filler

If your dark circles are primarily caused by a hollow or sunken area beneath the eye, tear trough filler is often the most effective solution. A small amount of hyaluronic acid filler is placed beneath the eye to fill the hollow, reduce the shadow and smooth the transition between the lower eyelid and the cheek.

Tear trough is one of the more technically demanding areas to treat, the anatomy is complex and the margin for error is small. At Tu Bella, it is treated with particular care and caution.

Under-eye skin boosters and mesotherapy

If the issue is thin, dehydrated skin under the eye, skin boosters or under-eye mesotherapy can improve the skin quality and thickness, making the area look healthier and less shadowed. These are gentler options and often a good starting point for younger clients or those where the concern is mild.

Polynucleotides

Polynucleotides (PNRS) are a newer option that stimulates the skin's own repair processes. They can improve skin quality under the eye, increase thickness and reduce fine lines, making the area look fresher overall.

Getting the right diagnosis

Before any treatment, a proper assessment is essential. At your consultation, we will look at what is actually causing your dark circles and recommend the treatment, or combination of treatments, most likely to help your specific case.
