Of all the areas we treat at Tu Bella, the tear trough is probably the one that generates the most relief in clients when it goes well. The hollow beneath the eye, that shadowy groove that makes people look perpetually exhausted, can be one of the most ageing features on the face. And it responds well to the right treatment.
What is a tear trough?
The tear trough is the groove that runs from the inner corner of the eye down towards the cheek. With age, and sometimes even in younger people, this area can become hollow, creating a shadowed appearance that looks like a dark circle even when there is no actual pigmentation.
The hollowing happens because of a combination of factors: loss of fat in the under-eye area, descent of the fat pad that supports the lower eyelid, and overall reduction in facial volume in the mid-face.
How is it treated?
A small amount of hyaluronic acid filler is carefully placed beneath the eye to fill the hollow, reducing the shadow and creating a smooth transition between the lower eyelid and the cheek.
The tear trough is one of the most technically demanding areas in facial aesthetics. The skin is very thin, the blood vessels are numerous and proximity to the eye requires exceptional precision. At Tu Bella, this treatment is approached conservatively, starting with a small amount and assessing before adding more. A heavy-handed approach in this area can create the opposite of the desired result.
What results can you expect?
When done well, tear trough filler reduces the shadowed hollow significantly, giving a more rested and refreshed appearance. The effect is immediate, though some initial swelling in the first few days is normal.
Results typically last nine to eighteen months. Because the eye area is less mobile than areas like the lips, filler here can last longer than in other locations.
Is everyone suitable?
Not everyone is a good candidate for tear trough filler. People with very thin skin under the eyes, significant puffiness or festoons (fluid-filled folds) may see better results from other treatments such as skin boosters or mesotherapy. This is assessed properly during your consultation.
