Summer is wonderful for the soul and considerably less wonderful for the skin. Increased sun exposure, more time outdoors, holidays, late nights and the inevitable dehydration that comes with warm weather all leave their mark. By September, many people notice that their skin looks duller, more uneven and more congested than it did in spring.

Autumn is the ideal time for a skin reset. Treatments that might be difficult to fit around summer plans, particularly those that require sun avoidance afterwards, become much more practical when the UV index drops and the social schedule eases.

Address pigmentation while it is most visible

Summer UV exposure often triggers or darkens areas of pigmentation, dark spots, melasma and post-acne marks can all worsen over the summer. Treating these in early autumn, while the skin is still showing the damage, tends to yield better results than waiting until winter when the pigment may have faded slightly.

Glutathione injections, exosome treatments and chemical peels are all effective options. Combined with a good SPF habit, which should continue year-round, they can make a significant difference to skin evenness.

Restore lost hydration

Summer heat, sun exposure, air conditioning and alcohol all deplete the skin's moisture reserves. A HydraFacial or a course of skin boosters (Profhilo, Seventy Hyal) can restore the plumpness and radiance that summer strips away. The skin going into winter is in a much better position to manage the cold, wind and central heating if it is properly hydrated going in.

Restart a collagen programme

Autumn is a good time to start or restart a microneedling course. The cooler weather and lower UV levels make the post-treatment sun-avoidance advice easier to follow, and a course completed across autumn and winter sets the skin up beautifully for spring.

Book your botulinum toxin top-up

If you had anti-wrinkle injections in spring or early summer, they may be wearing off around now. Autumn is traditionally a busy period for anti-wrinkle treatment, it is also a good time to review what you had and discuss whether any adjustments would improve the result.
