A question we field regularly at Tu Bella is: "What is the difference between a skin booster and a filler?" It is a fair question, both are injectable, both contain hyaluronic acid, and both improve the appearance of the skin. But they are designed to do different things, and understanding the distinction helps enormously when deciding which treatment is right for you.
Dermal fillers: structure and volume
Dermal fillers are designed to create structure. The hyaluronic acid in a dermal filler is cross-linked, a manufacturing process that makes the molecules bind together into a cohesive gel with significant firmness and lift capacity. This allows the filler to hold its shape when injected, adding volume, defining contours and filling deeper lines.
You feel the result of a dermal filler immediately, the change in shape or volume is visible right away. Fillers are injected into specific, targeted areas: lips, cheeks, jawline, tear troughs.
Skin boosters: hydration and quality
Skin boosters contain a different form of hyaluronic acid, one that is less cross-linked and more fluid. Rather than sitting as a defined bolus in one place, skin boosters disperse through the tissue, integrating with the surrounding environment and drawing in water. The goal is not to add volume or change shape, it is to improve the overall quality, hydration and resilience of the skin across a larger area.
Skin booster injections are placed at multiple points across the face (and sometimes neck and hands). The immediate result is subtle, but over a few weeks the skin becomes noticeably more hydrated, plumper, more elastic and radiant.
Which do I need?
If your concern is shape, structure or volume loss (deflated cheeks, thin lips, hollow tear troughs), you likely need a filler.
If your concern is skin quality, dullness, dehydration, fine lines, texture, a skin booster is probably the better starting point.
Many clients benefit from both, often with fillers addressing structural concerns and skin boosters maintaining and improving the quality of the skin between treatments.
Not sure which is right for you? That is exactly what a consultation is for. Book yours at Tu Bella in Hemel Hempstead.
