A few years ago, polynucleotides were barely on the radar outside of specialist aesthetic circles. Today, they are one of the most requested treatments at Tu Bella in Hemel Hempstead. So what changed?

Simply put, the evidence caught up with the treatment. As more clinical data emerged showing the genuine regenerative effects of polynucleotides, practitioners and clients alike began to take notice.

What are polynucleotides?

Polynucleotides (also called PNRS, or polynucleotide ribose sodium) are chains of DNA derived from salmon or trout sperm. Before the squeamishness sets in, this is a highly purified, pharmaceutical-grade ingredient with an excellent safety record and a long history of use in wound healing and regenerative medicine.

When injected into the skin, polynucleotides act as a biological scaffold that stimulates your own cells to produce new collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid. They also improve blood supply to the treated area and support the repair of damaged tissue.

What can they treat?

  • General skin quality and texture improvement
  • Fine lines and early signs of ageing
  • Under-eye concerns including dark circles and thinning skin
  • Acne scarring
  • Pigmentation
  • Hair loss (when used in the scalp)

How do they differ from skin boosters?

Skin boosters hydrate and add HA to the skin. Polynucleotides stimulate the skin to produce its own HA, collagen and elastin. They are a regenerative treatment rather than a replenishing one. The two work well alongside each other, and many clients at Tu Bella have both as part of their treatment plan.

What is the treatment like?

Polynucleotides are injected through multiple small injections across the treatment area. A numbing cream is used beforehand. There may be small lumps or nodules immediately after treatment that soften within a day or two. Some redness and mild swelling is normal.

Results are gradual, collagen production takes time. Most people notice significant improvement after two to three sessions, and results continue to develop over several months.
