Few treatments generate as much curiosity as dermaplaning. The idea of having a scalpel blade moved across your face can sound alarming, but the reality is one of the most satisfying treatments we offer at Tu Bella. Safe, comfortable and instantly effective, dermaplaning delivers the kind of immediate glow that clients come back for again and again.
What is dermaplaning?
Dermaplaning is a form of physical exfoliation that uses a sterile surgical blade held at a specific angle to gently scrape the surface of the skin. This removes the outermost layer of dead skin cells along with the vellus (fine, downy) hair that most people have on their face.
It is performed by a trained therapist and is completely painless, most clients describe it as a gentle scraping sensation, almost like being shaved very carefully.
What are the results?
The results are immediate and visible. After dermaplaning, skin looks smoother, brighter and more even. The removal of dead skin and vellus hair means:
- Skincare products absorb more effectively
- Makeup applies more smoothly and looks more flawless
- The skin has a more polished, radiant appearance
- Fine lines appear temporarily less visible due to improved light reflection
Will the hair grow back thicker?
No. This is one of the most persistent myths about dermaplaning. Vellus hair is fine and colourless, it cannot become coarser through the act of being removed. When it regrows, it will be exactly as it was before.
Who is it suitable for?
Dermaplaning is suitable for most skin types. It is particularly well suited to dry, dull or textured skin. The one group for whom we exercise caution is those with active acne, dermaplaning over active breakouts can spread bacteria and irritate inflamed skin.
It is an excellent pre-event treatment (it is completely safe the day before an occasion) and a useful preparation for other treatments, as it maximises the absorption of serums and active ingredients.
How often can you have it?
Every four weeks is the standard recommendation, which aligns with the skin's natural renewal cycle. Many clients combine dermaplaning with a HydraFacial for an even more comprehensive result.
