Dermal fillers are one of the most popular non-surgical treatments in the UK, and it is easy to see why. They can restore lost volume, soften lines, define the jawline and enhance the lips, all without surgery and with minimal downtime. But for first-timers, it can feel overwhelming. Here is what you actually need to know.
What are dermal fillers?
Most modern dermal fillers are made from hyaluronic acid (HA), a substance that occurs naturally in the body. HA attracts and retains water, which is why it is so effective at adding hydration and volume to the skin. Because it is biocompatible, the risk of allergic reaction is very low.
The filler is injected beneath the skin using a fine needle or cannula, where it integrates with the surrounding tissue and provides immediate volume or structure.
What can fillers treat?
- Lip enhancement: adding volume, definition or symmetry
- Cheeks: restoring or adding volume for a lifted appearance
- Jawline: defining and contouring the jaw
- Nasolabial folds: softening nose-to-mouth lines
- Tear troughs: addressing hollows and shadows under the eyes
- Temples: restoring volume lost with age
How long do results last?
This depends on the type of filler, the area treated, and how your body processes it. In general, lip fillers last six to twelve months. Cheek and jawline fillers often last longer, up to 18 months or more. Denser fillers in areas with less movement tend to last longer than those in highly mobile areas like the lips.
Will it look natural?
This is the question we hear most often, and the honest answer is: it depends on who performs it and how much is used. At Tu Bella, we take a conservative, anatomy-led approach. We use the minimum amount needed to achieve your goal, always working with your natural features rather than against them.
The trends you may have seen online, overfilled lips, extremely sharp jawlines, are a reflection of personal choice, not a standard outcome. Many of our clients leave looking like a refreshed version of themselves, not like someone who has had filler.
What happens during the appointment?
Your first appointment begins with a consultation. We discuss your concerns, your goals and what is realistically achievable. If you decide to go ahead, the area is cleaned and a topical numbing cream may be applied. The injections themselves take ten to twenty minutes, depending on the area. You will see immediate results, though there may be some swelling for a few days.
Is it reversible?
Hyaluronic acid fillers can be dissolved using an enzyme called hyaluronidase if you are unhappy with the result or if there is a complication. This is one of the key safety advantages of HA fillers.
